Who is the man behind that C300? It’s none other than Nino Leitner. Nino recently had the opportunity to DP a short film using a pre-production camera.
On the off chance you’ve been hitting the snooze-button on your alarm for the past month and a half, the C300 is Canon’s foray intro true cinema camera production. But discussions around the camera have been kind of like political or religious discussions—heated, provocative, and full of passion. On one hand the dynamic range, form factor, and quality of the imagery has every professional who’s had the opportunity to work with it singing it’s praises. People like Vincent Laforet, Jonathan Yi, and even Nino. But, on the other hand, a lot of high-end film and video shooters are disappointed that it’s only 8-bit vs. 10-bit. On top of that, the price Canon suggested it may sell for is US$20,000. Ouch!
Below is both the short film Nino DP’d, as well as a “behind the scenes” by Peter Hainzl. The film “13:59” was directed by another terrific filmmaker with a cool accent, Mario Feil.
If you’ve missed this podcast the first time around, you’re in for a treat. As usual, we cover some tech talk, but we really get to learn about WHO the filmmaker is. What makes him tick. This originally aired June 4, 2011 during my “Foreign Filmmakers” series.
In this engaging interview, we cover everything from how he works with his clients (you’ll love my Brady Bunch flashback), how we quotes a job, how he picks his equipment (he’s shot with everything from a T2i to the RED One), his views on sponsorship, gear-lust, what inspires him as a filmmaker, how he got where he is today, and of course he chimes in on my “Inception” question. (Hear why that movie was so annoying to him. Here’s a link to the College Humor video he referenced). I could’ve talked with Nino forever. The time will fly as you listen to this great interview.

Behind the scenes
(I’m not too crazy about the song selection here. They really should have used a cool U2 song or something. Just kidding! Well, I’m kidding about the U2 song thing. I really don’t like the song they picked. 🙂 )

Ron, thanks for including my BTS to the great piece Mario and Nino made!
The selected song was my lonely decision and I renownedly have a bad music taste 😉 Anyways, thanks for your feedback!

Ha! I hope you weren’t offended. I was just joking around. The BTS itself is very good. 🙂 Thanks for making it. I love a good BTS!
Peter Hainzl says
Not at all 🙂 I appreciate feedback – as long as it’s not rude.
