Photographers’ Death in Libya Puts Life and Drama Into Perspective

April 21, 2011 By Ron Dawson

Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros

Yesterday our industry was delivered sobering news when it was reported that award-winning photojournalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros were killed in Libya. It’s always sad news to hear of someone being killed, but it seems particularly sad (yet redemptive at the same time) when you hear of someone killed in the line of duty. They weren’t soldiers, firemen or policemen, but the work they did nonetheless had a powerful impact on the world. Tim was the co-creator of the Oscar nominated film “Restrepo” and Chris has covered violent uprisings all throughout the region.

These were men who pursued life with all they had. These were men who used their craft to give back to this world. These were men who took risks, risks very few are willing to take. I did not know them personally, but I know they were men of noble character.

In light of the drama that seems to plague our industries (both photography and filmmaking), it’s nice to know there are professionals like Tim and Chris redeeming us all.

Pursue life with wild abandon people. Use your craft for good. And follow the examples of Tim and Chris when you represent your industry.
