Featured Filmmaker Friday: David Robin and His Viral Video Adventure (c180-033)

May 13, 2011 By Ron Dawson

Today we interrupt our “Women in Film” series to bring you a podcast exclusive. An interview with event filmmaker David Robin. If you’re in the event filmmaking world, there’s no doubt you’ve heard of David. A 25 year veteran in the industry, David is a multi-award winning videographer, speaker, and filmmaker to the stars…literally. He’s done videos with or for people like James Caan, Paris Hilton, the family that owns King World Productions, the Olson Twins’ family, the Oscar and Emmy Governor’s Banquets (five years running now), and more. But nothing he’s done has reached the level of exposure like the wedding day music video he did for two Universal executives.

Up until last week, the video was getting an average number of views per day on Vimeo. Then all hell broke loose when the Huffington Post posted on their site. In one day the views went from 173 to over 34,000. Then up to 180,000 in a day. As of this writing, the video has over 1/2 million views in just one week and has been written about and featured on UK’s the Daily Mail, AOL, The Examiner, JuneBug Weddings, EventDV.net and the Today Show. David has officially arrived. Oh wait! He already had arrived. 🙂

Today Mr. Robin (who happens to be a good friend of mine) has granted this podcast an exclusive first podcast interview about the making of this video. David will talk about how he planned and shot it, the couple’s participation, the issue of the music used (a popular song for which, like most wedding videos, there are no sync rights), and what he thinks this video means for the world of event filmmaking. (As far as he can tell, this is the first professional shot wedding video to ever go viral). We’ll also talk about David’s history in the business, the ups and downs, the major milestones, etc. No matter what part of the filmmaking world you work in, you won’t want to miss this interview.

Bumper music for this show is “Tater City” by Glenn Shambroom, part of the TRUE ROMANCE collection, courtesy of Triple Scoop Music.

Fun & informative interview Ron. DR is always a good for a few great quotes & stories. I’m so happy to hear that he actually takes out the trash. 🙂 His video was well produced and better than the original BEP video! I hope it pushes the image of wedding films in a more positive manner. Great listen…keep them coming 🙂

Thanks for the comment Steve. DR is definitely a fun interview. And despite his success, he’s a pretty grounded guy.

I still haven’t seen the original BEP video. I gotta check it out.
