Are You Taking Risks with Your Art?

December 30, 2011 By Ron Dawson

“If you don’t take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful, that hasn’t been seen before?” ~ Francis Ford Coppola

If you want to push your art. If you want to take it to places it’s never been before. If you want to move the world to change because of a film you made, a photograph you took, or a book you wrote. If you want any of these things to happen, you have to take risks. You have to be willing to go up to the ledge, look over the side to the crystal blue water below, and then…

JUMP!

So ask yourself…

  • When was the last time you tried something with your craft you’ve never tried before?
  • When was the last time you made a film that challenged the status quo?
  • When was the last time you wrote something you knew was important, but would also piss a lot of people off?
  • When was the last time you made a decision about your art or your business that scared the hell out of you?

If your answer to these questions is, “I don’t remember” Or  “Never” then I guarantee you are not growing. Your craft is not improving. Your business acumen is not maturing. And you are probably bored in your business and/or frustrated with your art.

Make 2012 the year you take the biggest risks in your craft that you’ve ever taken. You might as well, because a year from now the world is going to end anyway. So why not?
