Saturday Song Selection 20151226

December 27, 2015 By Tommy Ferguson

Every week the staff of Dare Dreamer FM picks five Creative Commons songs that are free to use in your productions. You could do this work yourself, but it takes a lot of time. Since we do it anyway as we look for CC music for Radio Film School, we share our favorite discoveries with you. Enjoy!

I chose Theme in G by Tate Peterson because I found it to be a relaxing tune. I personally love the sound of a steel stringed guitar being played by someone who knows a bit more than just your average 4 chord Joe. This artist clearly knows what he’s doing by the intricacy in which the strings are plucked. This song is blues infused and completely instrumental. The only thing you hear is the guitar itself which makes it great for background music. I can picture this being used to showcase a small town and its people in whatever way a film maker sees fit. It reminds me of the Midwest and a lot of desert. This can be found under Blues, Soundtrack or Instrumental at freemusicarchive.org

I chose collapse by Axl & Arth because of its upbeat rhythm yet almost ominous tone. I think the choice of synth track in cahoots with the other electronically created sounds really work well together. The name of the song “Collapse” could give a hint as to what you could use this for, although I see many possibilities for this song. If I were to use this in one of my films, I would pair it with something dangerous and daring with the possibility for the world around my character to cave in on them. I could see this used in a Fast and Furious movie with death defying stunts around every corner. I could see it used in a party scene where college students are becoming so intoxicated that the world around them is spinning. I can also see this paired with slow motion imagery. Its dramatic and would pair well with a thrilling, dramatic scene. This can be found under the Electronic genre under the sub-category House at freemusicarchive.org

I chose standing nail by another cultural landslide because of the uniqueness in the way the artist pieced everything together. It’s not a typical layering where every part of the track lines up perfectly. It seems to me that the track falls in and out of unison which could relate to film in the way of focus. This song could be paired well with a bunch of camera tricks. The marimba makes me think of a wildlife exploration. At some points in the song, it seems too busy to hear every aspect of the track which could be annoying to some but I find it to be very artistic in a way that an evenly distributed track doesn’t understand. This can be found under Funk, Grunge or Spoken word at freemusicarchive.org

I chose Angel Academy by Matt Oakley because I first was intrigued by the name. It was fairly unique and it had me curious. After listening to the track, I appreciated the otherworldly sounds (supernatural or alien like) in harmony with the everyday sounds such as the piano and drums. It’s an interesting composition which makes for an interesting story. The song is fairly short compared to some of the other songs on here but I don’t think that matters so much as long as you can find good use for it. The picture that is coming to mind when I hear this is a very animated place when you or a character just walks in for the first time. It’s the big reveal; the introduction to a strange new place. I can see this being used as a theme song for an otherworldly children’s cartoon show; though it has a multiplicity of uses. This track can be found in the Soundtrack genre under chip music or synth pop at freemusicarchive.org

I chose let go by Philippe Beer Babel because of the way it makes me sit and feel the world around me. It seems like a good track to meditate to. It’s very soft and light which helps with relaxation. If you ignore the lyrics and only think of the flow of the music it feels like a breath of fresh air. If you listen to the lyrics, you can see the sorrow in which it was written. The lyrics are fairly simple. “let her go” and “she’s not the one.” There are so many stories in which these lyrics could fall into. It could be a love story gone wrong where the guy likes a girl but the girl doesn’t like him back. Of course this wouldn’t be the story in its entirety unless you want to make a film that’s somewhat depressing. I like this track because it feels like Philippe bears his soul in so few words by the way this is composed. This track can be found under Pop with the subcategory of French at freemusicarchive.org
