Saturday Song Selection – Spaces

March 5, 2016 By Chris Huslage

Happy Weekend to all you filmmakers and connoisseurs of music! This week’s Saturday Song Selection mixtape is all about the feeling of space.

This Week’s Picks

amazing-736881

Mainly I’m talking about the kinda of space that is so vast that you can’t see where it all ends. It’s about the openness and grandeur that you get lost in. Sometimes that includes outer space; but that can also include the space inside your room, where your imagination keeps you free from the surrounding four walls.

Featherlight (remix) by Lee Rosevere (CC-BY-SA)

I just discovered this artist on FreeMusicArchive.org and if you were looking for a song that makes you take a deep introspective look at yourself, this is it. In my mind, the soft humming in the background immediately takes me to a boat on a calm river, a beautiful purple and pink sky, and quietness surrounding on all sides. It’s about finding peace in the open space. For me, if I was ever on a packed metro or train, I would put this song on to take me away from the cramped train to the peaceful and vastly uninhabited river.

Madamemories by Taker51 (CC-BY-SA)

This is not your normal ambient/electronic song as I tried to go a little different. I still think it gives off a bit of an openness vibe. Plus with its quick beats and unusual background sounds, it definitely transports you to so many different places that you are left wondering a little bit where you are. I’ll admit it gets a little weird in the middle (as if too much was tried to be put in) but I recommend giving it a chance.

Still..Living…Alive by PC III (CC-BY)

Album is titled “Clouds”. This song fits with that title as it exemplifies the process of just lying in a field and watching all the clouds in the sky pass over you. I think this is a perfect song to use for a time-lapse film, with the sky changing colors, the clouds moving back and forth at a fast pace, and all the wonder of light and shadows. The only question is to 4K or not to 4K….just kidding…it’s always about the story, even in time-lapses.

Beyond Something Beautiful by Scott Holmes (CC-BY)

I think this song is actually a great song to listen to while you are walking through the woods and the clouds are starting to turn dark. It’s also a great song to use in a film, especially for that scene where the hero is facing a life changing decision. I think this song hits on all its points that it’s trying to make.  The title of this song is very appropriate for the theme that I was trying to go for, that through all the open space, sometimes on the other side is something beyond beautiful. But you have to make it across to find out.

Cylinder Eight by Chris Zabriskie (CC-BY)

This song is all about getting lost in space. Outer space, the space that is in the Featured Image of this month, a forest of trees, etc. It’s about embracing the vastness that stands before you and knowing that you could make it out to the other side stronger. I think it’s a great empowering song with its sweeping tunes and its grandeur sense of style.
