Tarantino, the N-Word & PC Filmmaking [RFS-SE10]

February 2, 2016 By Ron Dawson

Today we discuss use in cinema of one of the most divisive and perhaps misunderstood words in society.

Quentin Tarantino has arguably created some of the most strong and iconic African-American characters in cinema: Jules. Marsellus Wallace. Jackie Brown. Django. And most recently, Major Marquis Warren. Ironically, he also gets a lot of flack for his more than generous use of the infamous “N-word.” On today’s episode, I’m joined by friends of the show JD & Yolanda Cochran (indie filmmaker and ex-production company executive, respectively) to address this topic and the overall PC climate in entertainment.

WARNING: there is a generous use of the aforementioned N-word in this episode. You may squirm in discomfort as you listen. Or, more than likely, you’ll laugh heartily with only a slight twinge of uneasiness. Either way, our discussion will give you some provocative and deep ideas to ponder. Enjoy!

Radio Film School: Short Ends

Short Ends:
1. The unused portions of an undeveloped motion picture film reel. Frequently used by indie and student films on low budgets.

2. Short, autonomous Radio Film School documentary or narrative episodes about all things cinema.

Radio Film School
Host Ron Dawson takes you on a journey to discover what it means to be a filmmaker. A show unlike any other for the passionate and aspiring filmmaker, Radio Film School is more of an audio documentary than a traditional podcast. Think of it as This American Life for filmmakers.
