In light of the past two days’ topics related to style, it seems only fitting that today’s guest on Crossing the 180 is a filmmaker who has created a film series specifically about how there’s nothing new under the sun. Kirby Ferguson’s “Everything is a Remix” is a 4-part documentary exploring how much of today’s art is in many ways a mish-mash of what’s come before it. Part 1 was about the music industry. Part 2 the film industry. Parts 3 and 4 will come out later this year, but with over 750,000 combined views on Vimeo already, EIAR is already a huge hit. And it’s all just a personal project of this NY based filmmaker. In this candid interview we learn how this English major turned graphic designer with no formal film education got to where he is today. We learn about the process he goes through creating EIAR and his take on how one can (or cannot) make a living at creating work like this. A very insightful interview. And of course he answers my signature “Inception” question: does the top fall or not?
